The Divorce Act

The Divorce Act and the Family Law Act of Alberta govern child support. Under the Family Law Act every parent has an obligation to provide support to his or her child. Generally, support will stop when a child reaches the age of 18 unless, the child is enrolled full-time in a post secondary educational institution. The Federal and Provincial Family Child Support Guidelines are used to calculate support payments. The Guidelines establish a fair standard of support reducing conflict and tension by making calculations more objective. Application of the Guidelines is mandatory in all applications for child support.
